Philadelphia Union Head Coach Jim Curtin said on Friday morning that goalkeeper Andre Blake will miss the Union's upcoming match against the Columbus Crew. Blake suffered a hand injury at the end of the Union's 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire and was substituted in the 90th minute.
“With Andre unfortunately there was a fracture in the hand that will rule him out certainly for this match," Curtin said. "The hope is if things go well that there is a possibility that it is not a season-ending injury. There is a fracture in there and we are exploring the best possible way to get him back as quickly as possible and our doctors are going through some consultation as to what is next and best steps to get him healthy and back with the team.”
The first place Union have depth at the goalkeeper position with veteran Joe Bendik and homegrown Matt Freese. Bendik made his Union debut late in Wednesday's match but in his MLS career has made 173 starts and 558 saves. Homegrown Matt Freese made five starts for the Union in 2019, making 13 saves and getting results in four of the five contests.
