Philadelphia Union’s starting goalkeeper Andre Blake will be out for 4-6 weeks following a meniscus surgery, Head Coach Jim Curtin announced in his Tuesday press conference.
Before previewing the team’s upcoming match against Toronto FC, Curtin provided more details regarding the injury that’s left the Jamaican net-protector out sidelined since the end of April.
“It was a minor surgery where there were a couple of little loose flaps in there and they cleaned up his meniscus, which had a little minor, minor tear,” Curtin said. "But overall, you guys know how much we miss him and how important he is to this team.”
While Blake recovers, first-year keeper Oliver Semmle will remain in net, having already played in 12 regular season games for the team since signing during preseason. In his latest appearance, Semmle made four saves, helping lift his team to their second consecutive clean sheet.
“Now, Oliver has an important job to do for the team. He's done a good job in recent weeks, and hopefully he can continue to grow and get better in Andre’s absence,” Curtin said.
