Union to face Deportivo Saprissa in Concacaf Champions Cup

Philadelphia Union found out on Wednesday night that they will face Deportivo Saprissa for Round One of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.

The Boys in Blue were drew the the A1 position using a double-blind system and four pots. The two sides are slated to face off in February as the Union make their third appearance in the Concacaf tournament after earning their spot as the Third Place Finisher in the 2023 Leagues Cup.

This is the Union’s third trip to CCL after earning their first ever berth to the 2021 CCL. In their inaugural CCL campaign, the Union cruised to the semifinals after defeating Deportiva Saprissa in the Round of 16, 5-0 on aggregate and Atlanta United in the quarterfinals 4-1 on aggregate, before finally falling to Mexican giants, Club America, 4-0 on aggregate. Last season the Union advanced to the Semifinals once again with aggregate wins over Alianza F.C. and Atlas FC.

Deportivo Saprissa are one of two teams in this year’s Concacaf Champions Cup that the Union have faced off against in the tournament with the two sides facing off in the first round of the 2021 event, where the Union advanced with a 5-0 aggregate score. The three-time Concacaf champions from Costa Rica earned their 37th appearance as one of two winners of the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup Play-In.

The dates for the Union's two legs of Round One along with information about the 2024 MLS regular season schedule will be announced in the near future.
