Union II

Recap | Union II defeat Atlanta United 2 at Subaru Park

Philadelphia Union II kicked off its three-game homestand with a 1-0 victory, defeating Atlanta United 2 at Subaru Park on Friday night.

It was a quiet start on the Chester waterfront with just 10 unsuccessful attempts between both teams combined within the first half of the game.

Union II nearly put the first points on the board in the 24th minute – midfielder David Vazquez took a left footed shot from outside the box following a pass from forward Stefan Stojanovic, but it was saved in the bottom left corner by Atlanta keeper Vincente Reyes.

It wasn’t until the 57th minute that Union II claimed a goal; forward Nelson Pierre drove towards the net and crossed to midfielder C.J. Olney, who then took a left footed shot from the center of the box, hitting the bottom left corner.

Union II maintained the lead through the final whistle, marking the team’s first clean sheet of the season. Friday’s contest was Union goalkeeper Brooks Thompson’s third start this year.

With an updated 4-6-3 record, Union II will be back on its home pitch on Wednesday night to take on Crown Legacy FC at 7 p.m.
