Philadelphia Union II battled through a 3-0 loss to New England Revolution II at Subaru Park on Sunday night.
The game was scoreless through nearly the entire first half, with neither team finding the back of the net until New England’s Joshua Bolma scored in the 40th minute. Union II’s opponent maintained their momentum in the second half, adding in 21-year-old Brazilian forward Marcos Dias who scored a brace off the bench.
Union II took 14 shots on the night, but weren’t able to get a point on the scoreboard through the final whistle. With the result, Revolution II held down their second place spot in the MLS NEXT Pro standings, earning three more points which boosted their total to 51.
As for Union II, newly-signed defender Olwethu Makhanya made his Philadelphia debut, playing the entire match.
On July 18th, Philadelphia Union announced they had signed Makhanya from South African club Stellenbosch FC to a two-and-a-half-year contract. With this acquisition, Makhanya became the Union’s first player under the league’s U-22 initiative.
Philadelphia Union II will head on the road on Labor Day Weekend to take on NYCFC II on Sunday, September 3 at Belson Stadium.
