Philadelphia Union’s academy teams showed no mercy when they welcomed DC United to YSC Academy on Saturday. The Unions through U15s-19s crushed United by a combined 19-0 scoreline as Dominic Dubon and Marcelo Mazzola led the way with four goals apiece for the U15s and Aboubacar Camara knocked in a hat trick for the 19s.
Chris Brewer’s Under-15 squad called on Aaron Heard and Gael Medrano, the Golden Ball and Golden Boot winners respectively from the recent ScotiaBank Concacaf U13s tournament in Puerto Rico for their showdown with DC United. Both players started, with Heard scoring the opening goal of the game. The 11-0 scoreline reflected the organization and dedication to high pressure that Brewer has emphasized in the early parts of this season, and his team will be looking forward to a derby battle against FC Delco this weekend.
The U17s were not quite as prolific, though they clearly held the upper hand throughout. Paxten Aaronson, the younger brother of current Union standout Brenden Aaronson, opened the scoring after a tight opening half-hour before Caden Stafford added a second goal in the 45th minute. The Union walked away 4-0 winners in what became a late training exercise.
The Under-19s leaned on a number of players with Bethlehem Steel experience as they put four past DC. Much like the U-17s, it took about 30 minutes for the Union to break through. But once they did, the floodgates opened. Camara’s first came in the 34th minute and 22 minutes later he had a hat trick. Steel’s Selmir Miscic closed out the scoring in the 90th minute for his second goal in two games.
The U-14s didn’t score, but, importantly, they kept a clean sheet, with Fred’s side continuing their focus on shape and compactness before pushing to open games up.
Now the Union academy prepares for FC Delco as they look to round into form ahead of October’s GA Cup matches at the Power Training Complex outside Talen Energy Stadium.
