The Union academy continued a strong start to the 2019 season when they faced off against FC Delco over the weekend.
Phil Karn's U13s put up a 5-0 scoreline against FC Delco as they continued to storm through the opening weeks of the season. "The boys are getting more and more familiar with each other, and it's good to see them developing as a team," Karn said.
An early Matt Routzahn goal put the U14s ahead — Routzahn was one of the standout performers in the ScotiaBank Concacaf U13s Championship earlier this year — before Fred’s side locked down the game with a pair of second half goals. “We need to improve our transitions from attacking to defending,” Fred stated after the match. The 14s continue to work on cohesiveness as some of the other stars of the Concacaf tournament play up an age group with the U15s.
Aaron Heard and Gael Medrano are both playing with the U15s now, and Medrano got the opener in a 6-1 win over Delco. Dominic Dubon did Medrano three better as he collected four on the day, but head coach Chris Brewer kept the focus on the collective, saying that Delco’s organization made for a difficult opening half. “Not the greatest performance… but we used our pressure to come into the game in the second half,” Brewer reflected. That pressure, starting from the front, has been a point of emphasis for the 15s.
A 0-0 draw for the 17s meant they head into their DA Cup showdown with Montreal next weekend with a point to prove. The U17 side continues to field a young lineup while trading blows with full strength competition. Young striker Nelson Pierre led the line over the weekend as Ryan Richter looks to push his squad to build cohesion ahead of the GA Cup in October.
It's back to DA Cup action next weekend as the academy heads to Montreal for a showdown with the Impact.
