The opening week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada lived up to the years of anticipation and preparation, delivering plenty of excitement as Philly-connected South Africa, Haiti, the United States, and Ivory Coast each kicked off their group-stage campaigns. Here's a look at how each team performed, what's next on their schedules, and the Philadelphia involvement across the World Cup.
South Africa vs Mexico Recap
To kick off the opening weekend, South Africa went head-to-head with Mexico in the Group-A opener in Mexico City, ending in a 2-0 victory for the host nation with goals from Julián Quiñones in the 9th and Raúl Jiménez in the 67th.
Although Philadelphia Union centerback Olwethu Makhanya did not make an appearance in his country's first match of the tournament, his defensive talents could be key this week as Bafana Bafana turns its attention to a pivotal matchup against Czechia, where a strong result could put the squad right back in the race for a spot in the knockout stage since their last FIFA World Cup appearance as hosts in 2010.
Two of Makhanya's teammates, Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane, were both shown straight reds in the second half against Mexico and will be unavailable for selection. While a challenge for his country, the suspensions could bring about an opportunity for the 22-year-old defender to step up on the World's stage.
South Africa is set to face Czechia on June 18th at 12:00 p.m. EST at Atlanta Stadium.

Haiti vs Scotland Recap
Philadelphia Union midfielder Danley Jean Jacques became the first active Union player to feature in a World Cup match on Saturday, making his tournament debut as a starter for Haiti in their opening group-stage match against Scotland in Boston.
Despite a breakthrough goal from John McGinn in the 29th minute, Haiti remained compeitive throughout the match, in part thanks to an relentless 90-minute showing from Danley.
His steady presence throughout the match highlighted his importance to the squad as Haiti prepares for its upcoming Group C fixtures.

United States vs Parguay Recap
Philadelphia Union Homegrown goalkeeper Matt Freese gave Union fans another reason to follow the World Cup this weekend, helping the United States secure a convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay in its group-stage opener.
Also playing the full 90-minutes, Freese became the first ever Philadelphia Union Homegrown to compete in the FIFA World Cup.
The United States wasted little time asserting control, opening the scoring by forcing a Paraguay own goal in the 7th minute. Two goals from Folarin Balogun sent the United States to halftime with a 3-0 lead, and while Maurício got one back for Paraguay in the 73rd minute, Gio Reyna answered with a fourth to close the dominant match 4-1 win for the Americans.

Ivory Coast vs Ecuador Recap
Philadelphia was buzzing with excitement last night as Union base-camp guests Côte d'Ivoire secured a 1-0 victory over Ecuador at Philadelphia Stadium.
The majority of the match was filled with tension. Many goal attempts from both teams were unsuccessful and were rejected by the crossbar. That was until substitute Amad Diallo came on in the 56th minute. Immediately making an impact, Diallo scored a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner in the 90th minute, relieving the pressure for Les Éléphants.
Continuing their training at the Philadelphia Union’s facilities for the remainder of their campaign, the West African underdogs prepare for their next group-stage match against powerhouse Germany on Saturday, June 20th at Toronto Stadium.
