The Union were the better team against New York City FC, but they had been better than a New York side before and come out with only a point. Back in May, Jim Curtin’s men went to Red Bull Arena and got the best of one of the top teams in the east. However, the goal to prove it evaded them.
On Saturday night, Philly was in control once again. They shrugged off NYC’s surprising 4-4-2 shape, which was designed to target perceived weaknesses in the back line, and disappeared legendary David Villa and star midfielder Maxi Moralez.
Still, they wanted that goal.
And in the 57th minute, the got it. From hard work by CJ Sapong to intelligent play and a lung-bursting run by Ale Bedoya, they got it. From a Borek Dockal pass and a Cory Burke shot, the Union got their goal.
Below, you can see a full video analysis of the play that led to Burke’s goal, beginning with a pair of aerial challenges from Sapong and highlighting Bedoya’s contribution through the middle.
Enjoy.
