The good 'bye' week

Union bye week

Fourteen days is a long time between games, but that might be a good thing considering Philadelphia Union history.

If you comb through three years of games, you can pull a great statistic from the numbers:

The Union are 5-0-0 all time, when coming off a two-week break.

Philadelphia has not lost or drawn a game when forced to sit through what American sports fans would call a "bye week".

If you go back to 2010, there are 5 instances in which the Union had at least a 14 day break, then returned to action with a win.

2012:
March 31st to April 14th (14 days)

The first lengthy break in 2012, this stretch began with a 0-0 home draw against Vancouver. The Union picked up their first point of the year in a choppy affair at PPL Park.

After a two week break, the team returned home to grind out a 1-0 win over Columbus. It was the squad's first victory of the year.

2011:
April 16th to April 30th (14 days)

Dedicated fans might remember watching the Union battle with Seattle in torrential, downpouring rain. Carlos Ruiz' first half free-kick looked to have earned the team a win, but the Sounders managed to equalize late and force a 1-1 result.

Fourteen days later, Peter Nowak's team came back to PPL Park and gutted out a 1-0 win against a feisty San Jose team. Sebastien Le Toux's penalty kick was his first goal of the year.

2010:
March 25th to April 10th (16 days)

This was a long break in between games - 16 days without action. Philadelphia lost its franchise debut in Seattle, two to nothing.

After the long layover, the team played its very first home game at Lincoln Financial Field. Le Toux's hat trick against DC United earned the club its first win, a 3-2 result.

May 15th to May 29th (14 days)

The Union played their second and final game at Lincoln Financial Field. Danny Mwanga's first MLS goal was a stoppage time strike that salvaged a positive 1-1 draw against FC Dallas.

Two weeks later, the Union secured their first road win in franchise history. May 29th's 3-2 win against Houston was one of the best performances of the 2010 season.

June 10th to June 27th (17 days)

This stretch of 17 days was the longest layover in Philadelphia Union history. Peter Nowak's team ended a brutal run of season-opening road games with a 2-0 loss to Kansas City at the old Community America Ballpark.

That was followed up on June 27th with the opening of PPL Park on national television. Le Toux, Mwanga, and Fred all scored in a thrilling 3-1 victory against Seattle.
