Philadelphia Union have a tough task head of them on Sunday night as they take on LAFC at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, California. LAFC is equipped with the reigning MLS MVP and arguably the best team in the league. Philly will have their work cut out for them.
While the Union didn’t get leave Texas with a there were positive takeaways from the contest. Known for usually playing a smaller role on the team, Warren Creavalle stepped up. Coach Curtin described Warren’s performance as “one of our best players on the night.” Jakob Glesnes had a solid MLS debut too, finding success in distribution, communication and being physical with his 6’2” frame.
Facing off against the lethal attack of LAFC, defense will be critical in this match for Union. In his weekly press conference, Coach Curtin acknowledged the tough feat ahead emphasizing Vela’s undeniable skill and presence on the pitch. Not many teams have been able to stop Vela so the club’s strategy fill focus on trying limit the amount of touches Vela has on the ball. Even if they accomplish that, LAFC has some other strong playmakers in Latif Blessing and Diego Rossi, to name a few. After a loss in Dallas, Union will look to collect their first points of their season, but it won’t be easy… especially on the road.
Expect LAFC to continue to put major pressure on offense pushing the ball quickly down field and looking to regain possession after a Union stop. Curtin noted that one of the best things Bob Bradley’s club does is counter press to restart attacks near their opponents goal. They have been able to successfully do so in 2020 and when clubs do get near the attacking third, there is a solid defense with Eddie Segura and Dejan Jakovic holding down the backfield.
Philadelphia Union Players to Watch:
Jakob Glesnes or Jack Elliott: Glesnes making his MLS debut last week but is in a battle with Elliott to get the nod against LAFC on Fox Sports 1. Whichever centerback gets pairs with Mark McKenzie, communication will be key as they look to lead Union’s defense against one of the best clubs in the league.
Kacper Przybylko: The Union’s leading goal scoring in 2019 with 15 goals, Kacper is still looking to get back on track early in 2020 and what better time to open his account than with another goal against LAFC.
LAFC Player to Watch:
Carlos Vela: 2019 Landon Donovan MLS MVP. Recording-breaking 34 goals last season. The obvious choice. Vela has been unstoppable. If Union can even slow down Vela, they could leave Cali with a result.
