Philadelphia Union Name Team MVP, Defensive Player of the Year
Borek Dockal and Auston Trusty's successful 2018 campaigns earn them end-of-season team honors
CHESTER, Pa. (November 28, 2018)– Philadelphia Union announced today that two players received team awards following the 2018 season. Midfielder Borek Dockal was named the Union’s Most Valuable Player and Auston Trusty was named the club’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Dockal finished the 2018 season as the league leader in assists with 18. Logging more than 2,300 minutes, his feat broke the club record of 15 helpers previously set by Cristian Maidana in 2015 and tied him for the ninth-most assists over a single season in league history. Since the club’s inception in 2010, only two other players in the league have recorded 18+ assist seasons.
Tallying helpers in 13 games, where he led the team to an 8-3-2 record, Dockal logged five multi-assist games and five game-winning assists. He also contributed with five goals in 31 games. Internationally, he has been a key piece of the Czech Republic national team, recently serving as the side’s captain during UEFA Nations League contests.
Meanwhile, Trusty completed his first MLS season as the sixth player in franchise history to start 34 regular-season games in a single year. At 20 years old, he became the youngest field player in league history to play every minute of every match during a 34-game regular season, breaking the record previously set by teammate Keegan Rosenberry, during the 2016 season.
A Homegrown Player from Media, PA, he led the team in games played, games started, and minutes played (3,060) contributing with a goal and an assist in that time. He placed 10th on MLS’ ’22 Under 22’ list this season, a ranking of the top talents in the league under the age of 22.
