Philadelphia Union announced today that they have signed goalkeeper Andrew Rick, making him the 23rd Homegrown player in Union history. Rick, a YSC Academy student and a member of the Union Academy since 2016, is on a guaranteed contract through 2028 with an option for 2029.
“Andrew has made notable strides in his growth and development during his time playing with the Academy and Union II,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner. “He’s shown his ability to step up in big moments and keep his composure. As we add depth to our goalkeeping unit, he’ll have the opportunity to continue working with and learning from the top talents in our league and we feel confident he’ll be ready when called upon.”
Rick, 18, signed his first professional contract with Union II in 2023. Since making his MLS NEXT Pro debut on September 11, 2022, Rick has registered 82 saves in 26 appearances overall. This season, he has made six appearances (six starts), making 17 saves while maintaining a 1.17 GAA. On April 11, 2024, Rick made the deciding save against Orlando City B after seven rounds in the post regulation shootout to secure the extra point for Union II. On April 21, Rick made a save in the post regulation shootout against unbeaten New York Red Bulls II to secure the extra point at home. Rick was recently signed to four short-term agreements this season for the Union’s first team matches against Sporting Kansas City, Portland Timbers, Nashville SC, and Seattle Sounders FC.
A long-time standout in the Union Academy, Rick led the team to victory in the U17 2022 MLS NEXT Cup and secured a spot in the U17 2022 MLS NEXT All-Star game. He continued his success in the U17 2023 Generation adidas Cup, making crucial saves to help the team advance to the quarterfinals and earned a shutout victory in the championship match. In 2021, he played a key role in the U15 team's journey to the MLS NEXT Cup Semifinals and in 2019 led his team to win the U13 Concacaf Champions League tournament in Costa Rica, where he was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
Internationally, Rick received an invitation to the U17 United States Men’s National Team training camp in Palm Beach, Florida in 2023, being among 23 players called up to participate in the camp.
