The first MLSSoccer.com Power Rankings have been released ahead of the 2021 Major League Soccer season and the defending Supporters' Shield Champions are deservedly ranked inside the Top 5.
Philadelphia Union slots in at No. 4 in the rankings after the points were counted from 13 different writers, editors and columnists for the league's website. After a strong performance in the opening leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League against Deportivo Saprissa, the Union are looking to advance to the Quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
"They looked sharp against Saprissa," J. Sam Jones wrote. Olivier Mbaizo looked like a suitable replacement for Ray Gaddis at right back, new signing Leon Flach fit the part in his midfield role. Even without Mark McKenzie and Brenden Aaronson, this team is very dangerous."
The Union were slotted only behind No. 3 Portland Timbers, No. 2 LAFC and the Union's first MLS opponent, Columbus Crew SC.
