Philadelphia Union President Tim McDermott was inducted into the 2024 North Penn Alumni Athletic Association Hall of Fame on Saturday evening, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award.
A graduate of North Penn in 1991, McDermott was joined by homegrown outside back Nathan Harriel on Friday afternoon where they spoke to a full assembly with questions from members of the Knight Crier.
McDermott has served as President of the Philadelphia Union since 2016. Under his leadership, the Union are one of the fastest-growing clubs in MLS and one of only four MLS teams to sell out every game during the 2023 & 2024 seasons. In 2020, McDermott led the stadium naming rights to Subaru Park, the first sports sponsorship for Subaru of North America. In 2025, the Union will open a state-of-the-art, 33-acre, $75M sportsplex adjacent to Subaru Park.
McDermott is a 25-year sports executive holding senior leadership roles in four of the top five professional leagues in North America: NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLS. McDermott is the only person to hold c-suite roles with three Philadelphia professional sports teams (Eagles, 76ers, Union). McDermott is a Philadelphia Business Journal 40 Under 40 winner and a two-time PBJ Power 100 selection for one of the most influential business leaders in Philadelphia.
McDermott previously held roles as Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Chief Marketing Officer for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Capitals. The Eagles were named the fastest growing brand in sports by Forbes, received national recognition for their Tackling Breast Cancer campaign, were nominated for 28 Emmy Awards, and appeared in Super Bowl XXXIX. While McDermott was at the Capitals, the team set records for attendance, television ratings, merchandise sales & web traffic and sold out all 41 home games for the first time in franchise history. McDermott began his career in 1995 during the inaugural season of the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 1998 he was hired by the San Diego Chargers as the youngest sponsorship director in the NFL. A 3-year letter winner in football at Cornell, McDermott was named Academic All-Ivy, received the Scholar-Athlete Award for the highest GPA on the football team, and holds the record for the second-longest field goal in Cornell history.
