Philadelphia Union have signed Argentine midfielder Cristian Maidana, the club announced today. Maidana, 26, most recently was a member of Argentinos Juniors. He will join the team pending reception of his U.S. P-1 Visa, International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and will occupy an International and Designated Player roster spot under MLS policy. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“I was able to see Cristian play several times and I came away extremely impressed with his technical skills, creativity and one vs. one ability,” said team manager John Hackworth. “After having met him personally, I felt even more confident that he was the type of person and player who can benefit our club on and off the field. We are excited that Cristian is a member of the Union.”
Maidana, 26, spent time with Club de Futbol Atlante of Mexico’s top league, Liga MX from from 2012-2013. While there, the left-footed-player made 25 appearances for the club, notching three goals. Prior to his time in Mexico, Maidana had spells with FC Spartak Moscow of Russia’s top division and in Chile’s top division with Rangers de Talca as well as Spanish side Recreativo de Huelva.
