Philadelphia Union announced it has loaned midfielder Leo Fernandes to New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Leo is a player who we value and still feel has the potential to have a long career in MLS,” said Union technical director Chris Albright. “To play games consistently with the Cosmos will be an important step in continuing his development."
Fernandes was selected by the Union with the 63rd overall pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. In 20 career games, he has two goals and one assists in 10 starts. He scored his first career goal against Columbus on March 22, 2014 after coming on a substitute. Fernandes played for Reading United in 2012 and appeared in 10 matches. While with the Union, he’s also been loaned to Harrisburg City, both in 2013 and 2014.
The 23-year-old midfielder was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil, but grew up on Long Island. He was a four-year starter at Stony Brook and scored nine goals each during both of his junior and senior seasons. Among his accolades, he was named the America East Midfielder of the Year in 2011 as well being named to First Team All-America East.
