Season In Review: Sergio Santos

Signed in December 2018, forward Sergio Santos showed the league and Philadelphia Union the potential that Sporting Director Ernst Tanner saw when he added the Brazilian to the roster. After battling some injuries that slowed his 2019, Santos on the pitch was noticeable even in limited opportunities with four goals in 17 matches. This season, Santos’ pace left opposing defenders in the dust and on edge that led to a team-high eight goals. As Santos’ chemistry grew with fellow striker Kacper Przybylko, Santos’ offense grew. The 26-year-old grabbed some headlines against LAFC, scoring a banger of a goal and adding an assist.

When the season resumed in Orlando at the MLS is Back Tournament, Santos took over in the knockout stage. With a win-or-go home fueling the team, Santos scored the game-winner against the New England Revolution. The following contest, Santos notched two goals including a pacey breakaway to cap off the Florida trip with three goals and an assist.

As the pressure of the 2020 Supporters’ Shield heated up, Santos had a breakout performance against Toronto FC. During that top of the table clash, Santos delivered the fourth hat-trick in Union history as the club routed Toronto FC, 5-0.
