Post-Match Quote Sheet
Bethlehem Steel FC at Louisville City FC | July 20, 2019 – Louisville Slugger Field, Louisville, Ky.
Bethlehem Steel FC
Head Coach Brendan Burke
On what he saw from his team in tonight’s performance . . .
Grit and determination, defensively sound and concentrated for 90 minutes for one of the first times this year.
On Tomás Romero in tonight’s match . . .
That was a team-of-the-week performance. He made three point-blank saves and his handling was good in traffic. That was one of Tomás [Romero]’s strongest performances in a [Bethlehem Steel FC] uniform.
On his team’s first win at Louisville Slugger Field . . .
It certainly helps with the team’s confidence this year, to come into a building like this and get any sort of result, let alone three points. I’m happy for the guys. They know that they’re capable of a lot more now.
Goalkeeper Tomás Romero
On his performance tonight . . .
It was a good game. They guys in front of me, Mark [McKenzie] and Ben [Ofeimu], they all did a great job; Matt [Real], Walter [Cortés], Walter playing out of his position I thought he had a fantastic game. You just go one save at time, keep playing every 15 minutes, keep regaining focus and keep doing my job.
On the focus of his team to maintain the clean sheet . . .
It’s a 90 minute game, you have to stay focused the entire game. Even when you walk out on the field for warm-ups, you have to be focused from then all the way to the end of the game. I thought we did that perfectly tonight.
On if this result builds confidence moving forward . . .
100%. Last match was really disappointing and this match could have gone the same way. I thought the guys took what happened last week, we stuck it out and we got the result.
Midfielder James Chambers
On his team’s first all-time win against Louisville City FC . . .
I think it’s nice. It’s always good to come here. It’s a nice feeling because we’ve been here at the end of the season the last two years, so we know when we come here that it’s a good game and we have some decent memories of coming here. Obviously it was the post season, but also some sour memories because it always ends our year. It’s a nice place to come, a decent atmosphere and they’re a really good team. It’s always good.
On Tomás Romero’s performance . . .
I think he was fantastic today, he was fantastic in Hartford [Athletic] a couple of weeks ago and he’s putting in performances when he’s been asked to play. He’s been part of this program since I’ve been here for a long, long time and he probably hasn’t played as much as he would have liked, but anytime he plays, 90% of the time he does well. He stands up and tonight I’d say he stood on his head.
On what he saw from his team in tonight’s match . . .
We were decent with the ball at times. Obviously we are still a young group and we’re still growing. I think without the ball we probably showed a little more grit than we did last week and we have throughout the year. I spoke to the boys after the game and asked them if they were tired and what it felt like. Everybody was [spent]. We know what it takes to come on the road and get points. It’s not easy, but if you put in those type of performances then you’ll get the results you deserve.
