While Philadelphia Union fans were getting ready for the contest against Nashville SC on Wednesday night, homegrown Jeremey Rafanello turned in one of the goals of the season with Union II at New York City FC II.
It didn't take long for fans to start directly comparing it to another golazo fresh in the mind -- Jose Martinez's 90th-minute tying goal at Orlando City SC. On Friday, Union Head Coach Jim Curtin was asked to weigh in on the matter.
"We congratulated Rafanello in film today because that is probably Goal of the Year in their league for sure," Curtin said. "If I was to compare the two goals, which one is harder to do because I’d guess the expected goals on both of them close to zero. I like both. The technique with as high as Rafanello’s was is not easy where Jose’s gets on him quick and I don’t think a thought goes through his head. Jose’s strike the way it tails away, maybe just because the way the camera angles are that way, I’ll go with Jose. Sorry Rafa, maybe if there are other angles from his I haven’t seen."
