Wednesday’s game against Charlotte FC is Foundation Night at Subaru Park!
Philadelphia Union Foundation’s mission is to leverage the power of soccer to be an agent of change in the Chester Community, and it’s work with Chester High School Soccer is one of many ways they bring that vision to life daily.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Union hosted a group of student-athletes from the team for a visit to the stadium, where they had the opportunity to help the club prepare for Foundation Night festivities using their best art skills.
They were tasked with painting the vehicle used for the annual Car Smash; with spray cans and paint brushes, they worked together to give it a thorough Charlotte-themed paint job.
The group, which is a mix of Chester High School and STEM Academy at Showalter attendees, illustrated the blue crown, targets, and more across the once-white car, which will soon be destroyed by Union faithful.
The Car Smash is the night’s marquee activity at Subaru Plaza -- fans can donate $5 for three sledgehammer swings to a car adorned with silver, black, and blue designs created by the team themselves.
Chester High School Soccer will be back for the action on Wednesday, too. They’ll be recognized on the field by PUF’s Executive Director, Paul Howard.
“Our goal is uniting the Union and the Chester community, and this is a snippet of how we’re integrating these kids who live in the area into our team,” Alyssa Radu, Philadelphia Union Foundation's Director Charitable Programs and Operations, said.
In recent years, the Union has supported the Chester High School’s team through the creation of new practice fields, revamped game fields, outfitting by Adidas, coaches, and more to help grow the presence and power of soccer.
Aramis Hernandez, who is a midfielder on the team, even earned a job selling 50/50 tickets during Union home games alongside two of his teammates.
“It’s a blast. The games are a ton of fun to watch while I sell the 50/50 tickets,” Hernandez said.
“Being with the Union has given us opportunities. We didn’t even have a soccer team a few years ago. Paul also gave us opportunities for jobs with the 50/50, so it’s been a lot of help.”
