With a brilliant gameplan on the road to extend Philadelphia Union's unbeaten streak to seven, Head Coach Jim Curtin has been named the MLS Coach of the Matchday.
Curtin continued to show tactical flexibility on the narrow playing surface of Citi Field, rolling out a 5-2-1-2 against Eastern Conference rivals New York City FC. After taking some time to settle into a rhythm, the Union battled back from a first-half deficit behind a brace from Julian Carranza to take momentum into the dressing room at the break. The second half saw the Union bring their line of confrontation higher to shut down the space that NYC had enjoyed earlier in the game and prevent quick passing combinations. Eager to launch a counter attack with direct play, the Union bagged an insurance goal after Carranza was taken down at the edge of the box where Daniel Gazdag remained perfect in league play with a smooth finish from the penalty spot for the 3-1 road win.
Curtin and his squad return to Subaru Park to kick off a two-game home stand as they host Charlotte FC on Wednesday, May 31st. The match will serve as Philadelphia Union Foundation Night which will feature an online auction and the return of the fan-favorite car smash, both of which will benefit the organization as since it is an agent of change for the underserved in our area. Kick off between the two sides from Subaru Park is set for 7:30PM ET only on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
