History has been made at Subaru Park as midfielder Daniel Gazdag became the club’s all-time leading scorer across all competitions, hitting the back of the net for the 57th time in a Union kit on Tuesday night.
Proudly representing the crest he's sported for four seasons now, the 28-year-old etched his name in Philadelphia Union record books in front of a roaring home crowd on the riverfront with a perfectly headed finish to redirect a cross from homegrown Quinn Sullivan into the back of the net to make it a 3-2 contest in the 57th minute of play.
For eight years, Union Legend Sébastien Le Toux has held the record, but in his fourth season on the squad, Gazdag eclipsed that total, and it’s only expected to grow as the Hungarian designated player is set to remain in Philadelphia through 2025 with an option for 2026, per his contract.
Gazdag signed with Philadelphia in 2021, and he has since established himself as one of the team’s most lethal attacking threats. He scored five goals in his inaugural year donning the club’s blue and gold, then promptly flourished in his second season, dominating the team’s MLS Cup-contending season. That year, his campaign garnered him MVP consideration, totaling 22 goals and 10 assists through the regular season and playoffs.
In 2023, he scored 15 MLS goals, and he’s on track to topping that total in 2024, having already scored six through his first eight regular season games played.
27 goals in his grand total have been penalties, but his precision from the spot is just part of the role he’s played in the team’s recent success. Gazdag’s vision and spacing in the box have boosted his production, as just over half of his goals (30) have come in the run of play. That’s been the case especially as of late, as only one of his goals has been by way of penalty kick this season.
Gazdag is creating an unmatched Philadelphia Union legacy with every game played, and Tuesday’s goal further solidified that he is a club legend in the making.
