Philadelphia Union Academy's attempt at an historic third-straight Generation adidas Cup Championship came up short on Wednesday, with the U-18s and U-16s falling in their Round of 16 contests.
The beautiful game can be determined by inches but the experience gained in the event will provide even more benefits for the players and staff as they continue their soccer journeys. The day began with the U-16s taking on favorites Charlotte FC with the two sides deadlocked after 60-minutes of regulation with Olatimoni Gbalajobi finding the back of the net after Charlotte grabbed the lead. The contest would be decided from the penalty spot with the North Carolina side making a save in the final round to move on.
Wednesday's results guaranteed a new U-18 champion for the tournament as the two-time defending champion Union fell by a 1-0 scoreline to the Chicago Fire.
While their pursuit of the ultimate prize came up short, both teams look to bounce back in consolation matches against fellow academies. The U-16s will be paired with FC Tokyo (April 17), Portland Timbers (April 19) and VfB Stugttgard (April 20), with all matches kicking off at 9AM ET. Meanwhile the U-18s will face off agianst academy rivals LA Galaxy on Thursday afternoon with the two sides having squared off at MLS NEXT Cup. The U-18s wrap up their participation in the event with matches against Minnesota United (April 19) and Independiente de Panama (April 20).
