Philadelphia Union midfielder Daniel Gazdag has been named to the final 26-man roster for Hungary ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany.
Gazdag and the Magyars begin their journey with a pair of friendlies against Ireland on Tuesday, Jun. 4 and Israel on Saturday, Jun. 8. Hungary’s Group A opener will be played against Switzerland on Jun. 15 at 9:00 a.m. ET. With the callup, Gazdag becomes the first active Philadelphia Union player to be named to a UEFA Euro roster while with the club.
After becoming the Union’s all-time leading goal scorer, Gazdag earns a spot on a Euro roster for the second time in his career. He had previously been called up in 2020, but an injury kept him from joining the squad. Gazdag has earned 24 senior international caps for Hungary, scoring four goals in that time. In 2021, Gazdag earned his first call-up of the season ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March, where he appeared in all three matches, scoring his first goal in a 4-1 victory over Andorra Mar. 31. In his second, third, and fourth call-ups for the World Cup qualifiers, Gazdag appeared in five out of seven matches, scoring once against San Marino on Nov. 12 and the game-winning goal against Poland on Nov. 15. In 2022, Gazdag appeared in seven matches, including four UEFA Nations League A matches, in which he registered a goal against England on Jun. 14.
Gazdag recently became the Union’s all-time leading goal scorer in all competitions on Apr. 30 against Seattle Sounders FC at Subaru Park. Joining the team in 2021, Gazdag has made 99 appearances (90 starts) in league play, scoring 47 goals and registering 27 assists.
