As each day passes, Andrew Wenger is becoming more comfortable.
When that comfort zone is even stronger, he believes something will happen.
“I would expect myself to score goals and help my new club win,” Wenger said. “I like the vibe we all have in training. We just have to bring that into the games and carry it over. I know it will come. We’re having good training sessions. We just need to bring that effort and intensity into the games.
“For me, personally, I’m fitting in with these guys. I see so much talent here in this locker room. I think it’s simply a matter of time before it all clicks.”
Since being acquired from the Montreal Impact for Jack McInerney, Wenger has played four matches for the Union. He has scored one goal.
He expects many more.
“The chances are there for me and other players here and we just need to capitalize,” Wenger said. “I believe that once we get the first one, a bunch more will come. We’ll get going and get on a roll. We just have to keep working. We have to keep creating chances. It takes a little thing here or there.
“If you keep creating chances, goals will come. I’m confident in my ability and I know the other guys here are as well. We’re going to score goals. It’s just a matter of time. Once that first one goes in, it should open the floodgates.”
Wenger has thoroughly enjoyed played with the Union since he hails from nearby Lancaster.
Playing with his hometown club has been special.
“The crowd at PPL Park is amazing,” Wenger said. “They’re so passionate about the Union and that’s great to see. We need to put together points overall, but especially at home for us and our great fans. Playing for the Union and walking out on the pitch here at PPL has been a great experience. I can’t wait to see how it feels when we start putting it all together.”
His teammates are already impressed.
“I think Andrew has shown a lot of talent and you can see that he’s going to score a whole lot of goals,” said midfielder Maurice Edu. “He’s an all-around player capable of scoring and doing all the little things as well. He’s young and his ceiling is incredibly high. I’m excited to see him develop and help our club in so many ways.”
Despite a 1-3-5 (eight points) start this season, Wenger sees a club with a tremendous upside.
“When I was playing for Montreal, I thought the Union were very good,” Wenger said. “Coming over here, I can really see it. We just need to string it all together and I’m very confident that we’re going to do that.”
