Mbaizo looking to seize his preseason moment

With preseason training underway for the new Philadelphia Union season, many eyes are on right back Olivier Mbaizo. The 21-year-old Cameroonian is competing for the starting spot after a strong performance in his lone senior team appearance against Sporting Kansas City, and now he wants to show his teammates and coaches that he has what it takes to succeed over the course of a full season.

“I believe in myself and I believe that I have what it takes to help the team,” Mbaizo said through a translator. “I need to make sure that every game that I get to play that I demonstrate that I have the confidence to make it happen.”

Last season Mbaizo stood out during his time with Bethlehem Steel FC, playing 22 matches and picking up a pair of assists that aided the club in reaching the postseason. Now the right back aims to make a similar contribution at the top level.

“I wish to play a lot of games and give a lot to the team," he continued. "I feel that I have a lot to show and I hope that it can be shown this preseason.”

The time to impress begins next week with the opening preseason match against New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, January 30 in Clearwater-St. Pete, Florida.
