CHESTER, Pa. (February 16, 2023) – Philadelphia Union announced today that the club has signed their first round 2023 MLS SuperDraft pick, Holden Trent, to a one-year contract, with club options for 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 23-year-old goalkeeper will be added to the Union’s active roster immediately.
“Holden’s collegiate performances showed he is a talented goalkeeper, and we have been impressed with his ability to learn how we expect our goalkeepers to play in order to support our aggressive style,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner. “We believe his athleticism and mentality will give us one of the top goalkeeper units in MLS once again this season.”
Trent, 23, was selected in the first round of December’s 2023 SuperDraft out of High Point University. As a Panther, Trent racked up 145 saves in 52 appearances (52 starts) from 2020 to 2022. During that period, he kept a 1.00 GAA with 22 clean sheets in 52 matches. During his time at High Point University, Trent received many accolades, including being named to the TopDrawerSoccer Best XI Second Team, being honored as the Big South Goalkeeper of the Year, earning a spot on the Big South All-Conference First Team, and being named to the Big South All-Tournament Team.
While with the team in preseason training, Trent played 30 minutes in both the 3-2 win against Austin FC and the 2-2 draw against St. Louis City SC.
