Philadelphia Union Sign Attacking Midfielder Daniel Gazdag
Hungarian National Team player joins Philadelphia from Hungarian first tier club Budapest Honvéd FC
Philadelphia Union announced today that they have signed attacking midfielder Daniel Gazdag from Budapest Honvéd FC to a two-year contract with a club option for a third and fourth year in exchange for an undisclosed transfer fee. The Hungarian international player, a top scorer in the Hungarian First Tier League, Nemzeti Bajnoksag, will be added to the Union’s active roster following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa and will occupy an international roster slot. Gazdag joins the Union as they continue to advance to the Concacaf Champions League semifinals and is set to be an important attacking piece for the defending Supporters’ Shield champions.
“We are excited to welcome Daniel to the Philadelphia Union. He is a versatile player who can play multiple positions in the midfield as well as at striker and has the ability to make an immediate impact,” said Ernst Tanner, Philadelphia Union Sporting Director. “His aggressive style of play has made him a top finisher in the Hungarian league and a good fit for our system.”
Gazdag comes to Philadelphia from the Hungarian First Tier Nemzeti Bajnoksag league, where he played for Budapest Honvéd FC, the same club famed striker Ferenc Puskas came through and whom the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of the year is named after. Gazdag has scored 13 goals and notched six assists across 30 appearances (30 starts).
The 25-year-old came up through the Honvéd youth system, playing for their youth team starting in 2010 and advancing through their system playing for the U17 and U19 teams, before turning pro with the senior team in 2015.
Internationally, Gazdag has earned multiple caps for the Hungarian Men’s National Team. Before being called up to the senior team, Gazdag made a combined 17 appearances for the Hungary U17, U18, U20 and U21 national team squads. He made his debut for the men’s national team in a friendly vs. Montenegro on September 5, 2019. Since then, he has earned a total of six caps, and recently netted his first international goal in a 4-1 victory over Andorra la Vella in a World Cup Qualifier on March 31, 2021.
