Philadelphia Union announced today that they have signed Philadelphia Union II midfielder, and a U.S. Youth National Team fixture, David Vazquez to a contract as a Homegrown player through 2027, with an option for 2028.
The Union previously acquired Vazquez’s Homegrown Priority from LAFC and the LA Galaxy.
“David is a highly intelligent player with positional versatility,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner. “During his time with the academy and Union II, he has shown how skillful he can be with the ball at his feet and his ability to be advantageous in the transition on attack. He is another great example of how our commitment to developing talent that begins at the academy level allows them to excel in the pathway to the pros in Philadelphia.”
Vazquez, 18, joined the Union Academy in 2022 and in 2024 became Union II’s sixth academy player to sign an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract. In 2023, Vazquez started 18 of his 22 appearances in league play for Union II, scoring five goals and registering two assists. On April 16, 2023, Vazquez earned MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of the Matchday honors after scoring the game winning goal against Chicago Fire FC II. The goal marked his MLS NEXT Pro goal and MLS NEXT Pro’s 1,000th regular season goal in league history. On September 24, 2023, Vazquez earned MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of the Matchday honors once again after his performance against New York Red Bulls II, scoring the goal that clinched the team a 2023 MLS NEXT Pro playoff spot. Last season, David registered the second most key passes on the team with 38. In 2024, Vazquez has made six appearances (five starts), leading the team with three assists and the most key passes (12).
In April of 2023, Vazquez played a crucial role in the Philadelphia Union U17's Generation adidas Cup triumph against Dallas. In 2022, Vazquez played an integral role in the Philadelphia Union U17's comeback victory in MLS NEXT Cup final against Columbus with the game-tying goal.
Internationally, Vazquez has earned 17 appearances for the US Under-17 Men’s National Team. A standout player in the 2023 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, Vazquez registered four assists on the way to a second-place finish that secured a 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup berth. On November 21, 2023, he scored his first goal in the 2023 U-17 World Cup Round of 16 against Germany. In 2024, Vazquez was selected to join the U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team training camp in Rabat, Morocco, in preparation for this summer’s Concacaf U-20 Championship in Mexico. The tournament will send four nations to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. Vazquez came on as a substitute against England and started in the match against Morocco.
