The Boys in Blue concluded their Group Stage action with a 1-1 draw against Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul in front of the Union faithful on Sunday night. The Union finished No. 1 in East Group 4 and due to their seeding in the event are rewarded with homefield advantage for opening Knockout Round contest.
CF Montreal are into the Round of 32 matchup after picking up three points in East Group 2 action. They begin their run with a 4-1 setback to Orlando City SC but rebounded with a pivotal 3-2 victory over Atlético San Luis to grab the second spot from the group.
Friday's contest will be the third meeting in 2024 between the two Eastern Conference foes. Philly and Montreal battled to a 2-2 draw on June 1st at Subaru Park in a feisty match that had both clubs finish with 10 men. A few weeks later the two battled in Canada where Montreal scored three goals in the final minutes of the match to nab a 4-2 win.
