Philadelphia Union announced today that they will play Brazilian side Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in a FC Series preseason friendly match at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida on Sunday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Kicking off their preseason stay in Clearwater, Fla., the Union will play against Flamengo before facing off against four previously announced MLS opponents.
Flamengo, who plays in Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Brazil’s first-tier league, are one of two clubs to have never been relegated from the top division in Brazil. The club is known for developing several Brazilian internationals such as Zico, VinÃcius Júnior, Adriano, Júlio César, and Lucas Paquetá. Other notable players that played for the club include Romário and Ronaldinho. Flamengo has won seven Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, four Copa do Brasil, and a record 37 Campeonato Carioca.
While this match will mark the first time the Union’s first team faces the Brazilian side, the Philadelphia Union U17’s defeated Flamengo’s U17 squad in a group stage Generation adidas Cup match on April 12th, 2022.
The Union previously announced their full preseason schedule, with the team reporting in market on Jan. 13 and departing for Clearwater, Fla. on Jan. 15. For more information on the complete schedule, please click HERE.
