It’s been just over eight months since 24-year-old midfielder Danley Jean-Jacques departed French Ligue 2’s FC Metz to sign with the Philadelphia Union, and despite the challenges his move brought about, he's started to find his footing on and off the field.
Born in Petit-Goâve, Haiti, Danley speaks French, and it was no easy feat to leave that comfort and take on a new opportunity in Major League Soccer. Nonetheless, he's earned a spot in new Head Coach Bradley Carnell’s XI, starting in six of the team’s seven matches so far in 2025.
Danley's only missed just one match, but for good reason. He was called up to play for the Haitian National Team during the most recent FIFA international break, contributing a goal and an 86-minute shift against Azerbaijan in their friendly.
This week, Danley reflected on his first eight months in Philly in an eight question Q&A, translated from his native language below.
What have your first eight months in Philadelphia been like for you?
My first few months in Philadelphia were both fantastic and challenging. I discovered a new culture and met incredible people who quickly helped me integrate. But the move, the language barrier, and the adjustment process weren't easy at first. Despite that, I fell in love with the city.
In what ways have you evolved as a player since arriving to the Union in August?
Since joining the Union, I've really been able to progress as a player. The coach, the staff, and my teammates have helped me a lot, whether tactically, technically, or mentally.

In what ways have you grown as a person and teammate?
Changing countries and discovering a new culture forces you to step out of your comfort zone. I've had to take on more responsibilities and grow as a person. I'm calm, respectful, a good listener, and quite reserved. As a teammate, I'm always there for the team, to defend the club's colors and represent our fans.
You’ve started every match this season excluding the international break. What does it mean to you to have secured a starting role?
It's a real source of pride to have earned my starting spot on this team. I thank the coach for the trust he has placed in me, and my teammates who push me to give my best. Being a starter doesn't come by chance: it's the result of hard work, consistency, and solidarity between us.
What’s been your favorite match with the Union that you’ve played so far?
My favorite match with the Union remains the very first of the season, in Orlando. It was a highlight for me.

Is there any player or staff member at the Union that has been helpful in his transition to MLS?
When I arrived, it wasn't just one person who helped me, but the entire staff and the entire team. I felt supported from the start, and that really helped me in my transition to MLS.
What are you most excited for this season?
What excites me most this season is being able to play, improve, and, above all, bring joy to the fans. Their energy and passion push us to give our all.
What is one personal goal you have for yourself in 2025?
My personal goal for 2025 is to continue to improve, help the team as much as possible, and go as far as possible with the club. I also have one goal in mind: to score my very first goal with the Union.
