CHESTER, Pa. (June 20, 2018) – Following tonight’s completion of the Round of 16 in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Philadelphia Union will play Orlando City SC in the next round of the competition. The Quarterfinal contest takes place at Talen Energy Stadium on Wednesday, July 18 and is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET. All ticketing information will be announced at a later date.
The Union defeated the New York Red Bulls by a 2-1 final on Saturday, June 16 to progress to the Quarterfinal round. Should Philadelphia advance, it would face off against either Chicago Fire or Louisville City FC in the Semifinals, with the draw for the host of that match to take place in the near future.
The Union are in the Quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup for the fifth time in club history, previously reaching this round in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Philadelphia is 3-1 all-time in the Quarterfinals, having defeated Harrisburg in 2012, New England in 2014 and the Red Bulls in 2015 (on penalties). The Union lost to New England on penalties during this round in 2016. This will be the Union’s first-ever Open Cup meeting against Orlando.
First held in 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition for soccer in the United States and the country’s oldest annual tournament for team sports. 2018 marks the 105th edition of the tournament, which saw the Union finish as runners-up in both 2014 and 2015.
The Union next play on Saturday, June 23 in MLS regular-season action against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, when they induct Sebastien Le Toux as the team’s first-ever Ring of Honor member. The contest takes place at Talen Energy Stadium (5:00 p.m. ET / PHL17).
