Homegrowns
Major League Soccer announced yesterday that four Philadelphia Union players have been selected to participate in the fifth annual MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer®. Anthony Fontana, Mark McKenzie, Matt Real and Auston Trusty are all headed to Atlanta to represent the Union and MLS in the annual showcase.
The team, to be coached by Atlanta United Academy Director Tony Annan, features some of the league’s most accomplished young stars. The MLS Homegrown team will take on Tigres UANL’s Under-20 side on Tuesday, July 31 at 8:00 p.m. ET at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground (UDN / Twitter.com).
Eintracht Frankfurt
Philadelphia Union will host Eintracht Frankfurt tomorrow at Talen Energy Stadium in an international friendly, with kick off set for 7 p.m. The match will also be streamed live on Facebook.
Eintracht Frankfurt won a two-legged playoff to stave off relegation at the end of the 2015-16 season, and they have been climbing upward ever since. Under the guidance of Croatian tactician Niko Kovac, appointed in March 2016, Frankfurt finished 11th in the Bundesliga two seasons ago and leapt to eighth last year. Additionally — and quite sensationally — they knocked off Bayern Munich to win the DFB-Pokal Cup, prompting the domestic champs to swoop in and name Kovac their new coach when Jupp Heynckes once again retired.
