After scoring the lone goal in Union II’s 1-0 win against Atlanta United 2, midfielder CJ Olney was named MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of Matchday 12, the league announced on Monday evening.
Union II started its early June homestand with a deserved win against Atlanta, highlighted by Olney’s skillful left footed shot from the center of the box. Union II forward Nelson Pierre gracefully crossed the ball to Olney in scoring position, allowing him to tap it past Atlanta’s keeper.
Olney scored his first professional goal in his Subaru Park debut on March 26th against Orlando City B, and he’s found great success on the pitch since.
The goal marked his third this season – he’s started all eight of the games he’s played for Union II in 2023, recording 692 minutes so far. In addition to his goals, Olney has recorded 15 shots and three assists in that span. On the defensive end, he’s compiled two clearances and six interceptions.
The 16-year-old midfielder is part of the Philadelphia Union Academy, known for its consistent production of young talent. In April, Olney played an integral role in the Philadelphia Union U17’s Generation adidas Cup victory against Dallas.
Olney and his Union II teammates are scheduled to take on Crown Legacy at Subaru Park on Wednesday, click here to watch.
