For the second straight week Philadelphia Union II earned a weekly award with forward Eddy Davis III selected as MLS NEXT Rising Star of the Matchweek, the league announced on Tuesday.
Davis III scored the game-tying goal for Union II against rivals New York Red Bulls II on Sunday afternoon at Subaru Park, helping the club rise to the top of Eastern Conference.
After a dominant start to the second half, Union II finally found the equalizer in the 56th minute on a tremendous build-up and finish. After seeing their initial attack shut down by the visitors, Union II regained possession and quickly attacked from the opposite direction with a long-switching ball to Frankie Westfield. The vice-captain took a pair of touches before unleashing a hard-centering pass into the box for Davis III to quickly redirect into the back of the net.
The award is the Union Academy forward's second weekly accolade of 2024, with Davis III winning the same award for matchweek 3 and MLS NEXT Rising Star of March.
Union II is back in action next Sunday as they hit the road to take on FC Cincinnati 2 with kick-off set for 4 PM and coverage free on MLSNEXTPro.com.
