After scoring his first-ever pro goal in Union II's 2-0 win against NYCFC II, midfielder Francis Westfield was named MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of the Matchday, the league announced on Monday evening.
Westfield's achievement adds to Union II's successful summer campaign -- his goal propelled Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc's squad toward it's third straight MLS NEXT Pro victory and their seventh straight overall contest without a loss.
In his second season on the team, he's been a fixture of the team's first xi, starting 16 of his 17 games played. He's recorded 1398 minutes so far and in that span he's totaled 14 shots, finally finding the back of the net on the team's home turf.
In Union II's game against NYCFC II on Friday night, his goal earned Philadelphia a lead they wouldn't relinquish. In the 43rd minute, CJ Olney sent a ball sailing from the box to the opposite post, finding the quick foot of Stefan Stojanovic, who then tapped it to Westfield for a dagger to end the half. Westfield didn't hesitate, striking the ball past NYCFC II's keeper for the score.
The 17-year-old midfielder is part of the Philadelphia Union Academy, known for its consistent production of young talent. Westfield and his Union II teammates will be back at Subaru Park on Sunday, August 13th to take on FC Cincinnati 2 at Subaru Park. Click here to watch the action.
