CHESTER, Pa. (July 2, 2019) – After a career-high eight saves and a clean sheet at Hartford Athletic, Bethelhem Steel FC goalkeeper Tomás Romero was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 17.

The accolade marks the first-ever time that the Philadelphia Union Academy player has earned an appearance on the USL Championship Team of the Week and the sixth such honor for Steel FC this season. Romero was a wall in the club’s 3-0 win over Hartford Athletic on the road, making eight saves en route to Steel FC’s second clean sheet of the season.

The Cherry Hill, N.J. native has been a staple in the Steel lineup over the years. He holds the club records as the youngest goalkeeper to ever start a match (16 years, three months, 13 days), earn a win (16 years, seven months, 17 days) and record a clean sheet (18 years, six months, 18 days). The honor also makes him just the second Philadelphia Union Academy player be named to USL Championship team of the week while playing with the Steel on an academy contract. The only other player achieve this was Philadelphia Union’s Brenden Aaronson in 2018.

Bethlehem Steel FC next travels to take on in-state rivals Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Thursday, July 4 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The match is set to be broadcast on ESPN+.
