After helping Philadelphia Union secure a road point against the Columbus Crew on Saturday night, Andre blake has been selected for the MLS Team of the Matchday.
Blake reminded the league he’s one of the top showstoppers in MLS as he made eight saves away from the friendly confines of Subaru Park to help the Boys in Blue maintain a top four spot in the Eastern Conference.Â
Five of Blake’s eight shot stops came in the first half as the hosts tried to turn the hometown energy into goals but couldn’t get by the three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in the run of play.
Blake was put to work from the relentless Crew attack as the Reggae Boyz captain made a string of impressive saves starting in the 31st minute, when he stopped Alexandru Matan’s shot from the right of the box. He conceded a corner in the same minute, then made a preventative dive for a Hernández shot that ended up going just right of the net. He denied Hernandez again in the 34th minute, stopping his shot from the center of the box this time. He made yet another in the 37th minute, this time preventing Yaw Yeboah’s shot toward the bottom left corner.
With the latest inclusion in the league's matchday honors, Philadelphia Union have had nine different players recognized in 2023: Julian Carranza (Matchday 1, 15, 17, 21), Daniel Gazdag (Matchday 1, 8, 25), Jakob Glesnes (Matchday 6), Mikeal Uhre (Matchday 9), Damion Lowe (Matchday 11), Kai Wagner (Matchday 12 and Matchday 30), Jose Martinez (Matchday 20) Jack Elliott (Matchday 25) and Andre Blake.
Philadelphia Union is back in action on Wednesday night when they host Atlanta United FC with the match presented by Widener University. Kick off is set for 7:30PM ET with the broadcast only on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
