Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake was named to Major League Soccer’s Team of the Week for Week 29, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
The two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year was a brick wall once more, making a pair of huge second-half saves to earn his 10th clean sheet of the season. While Blake has racked up 48 shutouts in his career, the 2021 season marks just the second time the Jamaican international has hit double digit shutouts in a single season. The other came in 2018 when Blake racked up 10.
The first of Dre's big stops came in the 76th minute when he denied Pedro Santos' attempt from the penalty spot with the match in a critical moment. With a dangerous two-goal lead but down a man to the defending MLS Cup Champions, Blake made his third PK stop of the season.
The Crew wouldn't go down quietly and once again Blake was there to stop any sniff of momentum just moments later. Darlington Nagbe collected the ball in a dangerous position at the edge of the box and riffled a curling ball destined for upper corner. But Blake was there once more.
While Andre Blake departs the club for a pair of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with the Jamaican National Team, Philadelphia Union is back in MLS action on Saturday night with a trip to FC Cincinnati. Kick off from the Queen City is set for 8 p.m. ET, with the action on PHL17 and PhiladelphiaUnion.com.
