Philadelphia Union defender Jakob Glesnes was named to Major League Soccer’s Team of the Matchday bench for Matchday 28, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
The Union centerback turned in another standout performance against the club's I-95 rivals where the Boys in Blue picked up a 3-1 win against D.C. United.
During the match, Glesnes was tasked with shutting down forward Christian Benteke and delivered with clutch stops and a team-high five clearances in the win.Â
After the Boys in Blue jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead, the hosts pushed everything forward in hopes of getting back into the match. D.C. United nearly did just that when Mateusz Klich teed up a perfectly weighted cross into the box for Benteke that forced a highlight-reel save from the three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year to keep the cleansheet. The ball fell to the post where Benteke attempted another shot that again was blocked before sending a centering pass for Klich. The midfielder unleashed a blast of his own as Blake got back into position but was denied as well with a headed effort by Glesnes.
Glesnes and the rest of the Boys in Blue are back in action on Wednesday night when they head north of the border to take on Toronto FC. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with the action free on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
