Match Recap: Bethlehem Steel FC continues fighting, but Memphis 901 FC prevails 5-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (September 28, 2019) â€“ Bethlehem Steel FC came up against another team on a tear in Memphis 901 FC tonight. The Steel fought throughout the match, but Memphis put in a stellar performance to finish the match with a 5-0 win.

It all started out quick tonight in AutoZone Park, with Memphis getting on the board with a seventh-minute goal from Elliot Collier. Things piled on quickly for the Steel, as former Philadelphia Union midfielder Marcus Epps added his name to the scoresheet and former Steel FC forward Brandon Allen, the brother of Union defender RJ Allen, tallied a brace (29’, 36’) before the half was up. The Steel defense tightened things up in the second half, with Liam Doyle adding the lone Memphis goal in the 50th minute after bodying out Steel goalkeeper Todd Morton on a set piece. In the end 901 FC has been on a hot streak, taking down most challengers and rested their top-choice starters for the mid-week matchup against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in order to focus on picking up points in this match. 5-0 at the end and Memphis continued their run of form.

Steel FC goalkeeper Todd Morton was able to make three saves in tonight’s match, including one where he had to make a diving stop to shut down the 901 FC attack. His three stops bring him to 38 total on the year and tie him with former Philadelphia Union Academy shot stopper Tomás Romero for most on the Steel in 2019. Defender Walter Cortés made a game-high six tackles against Memphis, while Faris made a team-high four attempts on goal.

The Steel return home for their final home match of the 2019 USL Championship Regular Season next weekend for a showdown with Charlotte Independence on Sunday, October 6 (7:30 p.m. ET | Talen Energy Stadium | Chester, Pa. | ESPN +). The match is part of another double header at Talen Energy Stadium with Philadelphia Union taking on New York City FC beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET.
