After scoring the final goal in Philadelphia Union II’s 3-1 win against New York Red Bulls II, midfielder David Vazquez was named MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of the Matchday, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Vazquez’s goal in stoppage time helped to secure Union II’s second consecutive MLS NEXT Pro playoff berth. The 17-year-old had an impressive regular season on Philadelphia’s, starting 17 of 21 games played. During his time on the pitch, he’s compiled five goals and two assists.
In addition to his MLS NEXT Pro play, he contributed to the Philadelphia Union Academy Generation adidas Cup victory, scoring the first goal of the tournament for the U17 squad. He was also named to the United States Men's Youth Under-17 squad for Václav Ježek Cup in Hradec Králové, Czech in early September.
