When Haris Medunjanin looked up and spotted Fafa Picault in a defender's shadow, he knew he'd have to get creative to put the ball through the lines to his teammate. David dl read Medunjanin's mind, and as the Bosnian slipped a pass into Picault's path, Accam was already streaking through the defense, ready to tuck home his first goal of 2019.
And after he did so, dinking a careful finish against the far post and into Joe Bendik's goal, Accam sunk to his knees and pointed his fingers to the sky, saying a prayer to his recently departed father.
Accam admitted after the match that his father rarely got to see him play. And he reiterated that his number one goal when he goes out on the field is to help his team win whenever he gets a chance. That's the attitude that Jim Curtin preaches day in and day out in training, and to see Accam adopt it and put in the defensive work required to shut down previously undefeated Columbus side.
Ten minutes after his first, Accam was on the board again. This time he had to put in a tremendous individual effort to fight through challenges, spin away from his man and smack goal number two past Bendik.
The Union never looked back. After only scoring once from open play through the first three matches of the season, Accam had doubled that number in less time than it takes to cook a frozen pizza. The winger struggled to make his mark in 2018 but here he was, galvanizing a depleted group when they needed it most, in front of home fans desperate for a win.
Accam rose to the occasion, and he did it with his father's memory firmly in mind. It was an important match for the Ghanaian's team, but a huge personal moment for a player that needed to perform when restored to the lineup.
David Accam is the MLS Player of the Week, and deservedly so.
